The lake is approximately 34 miles in length and 1.3 mile across at its widest point and provides 20,300 acres of surface area. The water level is regularly controlled so that the fluctuation level, under normal conditions, is not more than 1 foot up or down. The quality of the water is rated as A-2 by the NC Stream Sanitation Commission, this is the highest category found in eastern North Carolina.
